This beer style is one of the oldest in Belgium, and typical for the West Flanders region. This red-brown, high-fermentation beer matures in oak barrels (foeders) for a minimum of 18 months, and is then cut with a young beer. This is the time-honoured approach traditionally taken with such typical Flemish red ales. The nose is filled with a sweet-and-sour aroma, with touches of fruit and wood. This ale’s particular taste is characterised by the excellent balance between the fruitiness of the yeast, the slight sweetness and the mildly sour taste so particular to a spontaneously fermented beer. The finish is very refreshing and satisfyingly thirst-quenching.
